Overview

Having a double, or even a triple chin, is a common condition. Usually, it’s nothing to worry about and is nothing more than a layer of fat that has formed under the chin. When that layer becomes substantial enough, it forms a wrinkle that creates the appearance of one or more extra chins.

Even though, medically speaking, a double chin isn’t usually a sign of a health problem, many people consider them unsightly, and can harm your self-image.

What is a double chin?

A double chin, is nothing but a layer of fat under your chin and jaw bone. This fat is called submental fat. Some research also suggests that double chin is a form of cellulite.

Most over weight people have a double chin. It appears as though their face merges right into their neck. The jaw line disappears and no amount of facial exercises or double chin exercises help.

Often, this problem is associated with weight gain. But it may persist even after losing weight. Many men and women observe that even after a healthy diet and weight loss they are not able to reduce double chin which has already formed.

What causes a double chin?

Aging

As you grow older your skin becomes loose, facial muscles become lax, face fat slides down and hormones cause fat to deposit in the lower face area. The other most common cause that often goes overlooked is simply the effect that age has on our skin.

Posture

Tilting your head continuously to work on your laptop and mobile device causes the tech neck syndrome. Apart from neck pain, you also develop wrinkles on the neck and double chin.

Size of Lower Jaw

Indians are genetically inclined to have a small jaw bone. This gives the appearance of a double chin even in skinny people and youngsters.
